Jest jednym z najlepszych aktorów brytyjskich. Ukończył Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Uwagę krytyków zwrócił na siebie rolą Charlesa Rydera w telewizyjnym serialu "Brideshead Revisited". To jeden z niewielu aktorów, którym udało się uzyskać popularność mimo iż nie grywali w filmach przeznaczonych dla szerokiej publiczności. Wyspecjalizował się w rolach ludzi z wyższych klas. W 1988 r. wzbudził zachwyt brawurową rolą w filmie Davida Cronenberga "Nierozłączni". Wcielił się tam w dwie role, Elliota Mantle i jego brata bliźniaka Beverly'ego Mantle. Kilka lat później otrzymał Oscara za swoją kreację w filmie "Druga prawda". Jeremy Irons jest osobą, która bardzo ceni swoją prywatność. Rzadko udziela wywiadów i nigdy nie odpowiada na pytania dotyczące jego rodziny. Jeremy Irons rozpoczął swoją karierę w angielskim teatrze Bristol Old Vic. Kontynuował ją w Londynie, grając w przedstawieniu "Godspell" jako Jan Baptysta. Punktem kulminacyjnym jego teatralnych występów był udział w sztuce "Ryszard II" dla "Royal Shakespeare Company".
